Bhupendra Shivji Soneji’s earliest memories from his childhood in India are of his father’s devotion to his practice of yoga. Taught and encouraged by his father, Soneji went on to become a dedicated practitioner himself, and yoga became an essential part of his daily routine. He further expanded his training under the tutelage of Swami Satyananda Saraswati of the Bihar School of Yoga.
Soneji has practiced yoga continuously all his life and has been teaching it for more than 40 years. He has dedicated his life to creating and sustaining a compassionate community and is deeply committed to sharing the principles and philosophy of yoga, in addition to teaching and practicing the postures.
Soneji completed his degree in engineering from University of Bombay in 1967. He continued his formal education in the United States, earning his Masters degree at Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, New York, and becoming a civil engineer. He received his professional engineering license in 1975.
In 1998, Soneji formally founded Sarathi Yoga Foundation in Irvine, CA, as a means to promote yogic teaching and to help people discover the beauty of yoga and the joy of practicing inner silence. In Sanskrit, Sarathi means a charioteer, a guide, a helper or living Life with the Divine.
“Yoga is a science of uncovering one’s enormous hidden dynamic potential,” Soneji explains. “Yoga is the tool to reveal happiness from within. Yoga is not a science for tomorrow or next life, but it helps one expand in the direction of higher consciousness, irrespective of age, gender, race, or various mental, physical, emotional and spiritual states. Spending just 15-30 minutes a day practicing yoga results in increased efficiency, saving both time and energy. After experiencing the beauty of yoga, no one can live a moment without it.”
Soneji’s style of teaching connects the ancient postures with modern science. He shares how yoga can be applied to daily activities without strenuous effort. He inspires his students to participate in order to experience simple, effortless postures that eventually lead to long lasting results.
Soneji teaches weekly yoga classes in Irvine, California, and frequently travels to major cities to give lectures as a guest speaker at seminars throughout the United States and Canada. He conducts spiritual retreats, several yoga camps and meditation retreats in southern California each year. All services, classes and workshops are offered free of charge, and any donations received are used solely to continue to share yogic knowledge.
He also collaborates with prominent physicians in stress management seminars, monitoring the effects of yoga on stress levels, always with impressive results.
